CAS EVALUATION OUTLINE

By IB Clever Subscriber · Comments (0)
Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

CAS evaluation requires the making of qualitative judgments according to performance criteria which encourage the students to show evidence of personal development in their attitudes, values and skills.

During the two years of the Diploma Programme there are many sources which inform the evaluation process. The IBO requires every Diploma Programme candidates CAS performance to be evaluated in two ways, as described below.

1       Evaluation by the Student

*   Records of activities/projects
*   Self-evaluations
*   Final, summary report with final self-evaluation

2       Evaluation by the School

*  Evaluation by the supervising adult, including comments on each activity/project supervised
*  Evaluation by the CAS coordinator, including guidance given during the course of CAS
CAS is the heart of the Diploma Programme-Maria Piaggio

The IBO recommends that a range of evaluation methods be used whenever possible. These may be formal or informal.

Formal evaluation is based primarily on the school evaluations and self-evaluations of each activity.

One method of informal evaluation is direct observation of students at the time of an activity by the adult leader and the CAS coordinator. Group and individual discussions with the leader and the CAS coordinator are also helpful. Regular meetings of students to share their experiences can help them develop a deeper understanding of what CAS means for their personal development.

CAS has parity of esteem with all the other requirements for the award of the International Baccalaureate diploma. For a candidate to meet the CAS requirement fully, his or her records, along with the self-evaluations and school evaluations, must clearly demonstrate quality, balanced content and genuine content. On its own, proof of time spent on CAS is not sufficient. .

Evaluation by the Student

The evaluation should focus on the following:

•     A CAS diary, file or digital portfolio containing written, and perhaps visual, evidence of the candidate’s involvement .
•     Evidence of planning and organization’
•     Evidence of commitment and effort
•     The candidate’s. personal achievement and development, taking into account, skills, attitudes and values at the start of the activity
•     Evidence of reflection throughout their CAS activities.

Reflection and Self-evaluation by the Student

CAS coordinators should explain clearly to all students at the beginning of their involvement the importance of writing self-evaluation reports or reflective comments at the end of each series of regular activities or a project. Students should be reminded that:

•  A record must be kept of each CAS activity undertaken
•  Reflective comments, in writing, should be made at the conclusion of each series of regular activities or at regular intervals in the course of a project
•  Records and reflective comments should contribute to a CAS diary, file or digital portfolio.

Evaluation by the School

Evaluation by Supervising Adults

Minimally, this requires a considered comment to be written on the student self-evaluation form at the conclusion of a series of regular activities or a project. Supervising adults are encouraged to write letters to be placed in the student’s diary, file or portfolio. Where there is an activity involving many students, a letter certificate of achievement can be presented to those who have successfully met the requirements.

The CAS Coordinator: Record Keeping and Evaluation

Schools are required to compile and keep full records of each Diploma Programme candidate’s CAS performance. These records will facilitate the writing of full evaluation comments for future transcripts, for transferring to another school and for giving to the regional office on request.

The CAS coordinator should make a final, individual evaluation of the performance of each student. Evaluation should be based on more than the student’s written report: oral reports, group presentations or a presentation at the site of the activity should also be encouraged.

CAS DIARY WRITING GUIDELINES

By IB Clever Subscriber · Comments (0)
Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Students will maintain their own diary/blog, as a record of any CAS experiences over the 18 month period. The components of the diary /blog will be used as one of the main tools for evaluation of students CAS commitment. Below is an outline on the procedures for maintaining a CAS diary. All forms referred to in the procedures are included in IB student’s CAS diary.

CAS Proposal Form: For each activity, a brief description of the activity stating why the student chose to do it. The proposal form must be signed by the activity leader and a CAS coordinator before the activity begins. Please note that unless a student have submitted a CAS Activity Proposal Form and the activity has been agreed upon in advance, it cannot be included as part of the CAS programme.

Target Setting: Students need to set their goals to work towards.

Weekly Reflections: Students need to write regular reflective comments after each activity session. These need to be signed by the supervisor at the end of each term before submitting the same to the CAS coordinator.

The CAS coordinator will check student’s journal regularly and use the entries as a discussion point for tutorials.

CAS Self Assessment Essay: Two 500-1000 word reflective essays on student’s involvement in the CAS programme. This should be submitted to a coordinator at the end of Term 3 and 4.

Please note it is student’s responsibility to complete the requirements of the CAS programme. The CAS coordinator will support and help students to do so but students also need to be responsible for their participation, target setting and self evaluations.

HOW TO ORGANISE CAS PROGRAMME

By IB Clever Subscriber · Comments (0)
Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

The steps below on how to organize CAS Programme are those that we execute in the school where I’m currently working.

1.  Student selects a Creativity and Action activity from the school activities programme and then choose a Service project for either Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. The activities a student chooses to do must be valuable and involve new learning skills. Refer to the Guiding questions.

2. Once an activity is chosen, complete a CAS Activity Proposal Form which is to be taken to the supervisor for a signature. A copy of “Information for a CAS Activity Leader” should be given to the supervisor so that they understand the CAS programme and is aware of their responsibilities. Copies of these documents can be found with the CAS Coordinator.

3. Students should submit all CAS proposal forms to the CAS Coordinator for approval. Every IB DP students must ensure that the CAS Proposal Form is completed by the activity supervisor and signed by the CAS coordinator prior to starting the activity.

4. Start the activities!

5. Keep a weekly record of any involvement

6. Towards the end of each term CAS diary should be completed and signed by the student supervisor.

Service Projects
These occur on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoons between 2.30 and 4.3Opm. Students should not choose another school activity on these days unless they have checked with the CAS Coordinator first.

Activities may be posted on the CAS notice board in the students’ common Room and the class blog, so students are required to read it regularly.

If a student volunteer to help with school activities  he/she needs to ask the CAS coordinator if the activity is appropriate for CAS. If it is, he/she must ask the member of staff organizing the activity if he/she can help with their event.

A student must contact organizations and arrange to help!

Arrange a group project or activity for yourself and other students.
