Final CAS Essay

By IB Clever Subscriber · Comments (1)
Saturday, April 30th, 2011

This is a final CAS reflection by a student after a successful two year IB Diploma Programme. The essay is done by one of my quick witted and very up to date student just before his final CAS interview. I have been fortunate enough to interact with, facilitate and guide students who have shown confidence, eagerness to learn, humility and excellent organizational skills.

This Final CAS essay or reflection is useful for CAS Coordinators and schools to see how the student felt at the completion of CAS, which areas he/she has developed, in short, their overall growth.

An exhilarating hands-on edification

“Join the IB Diploma Program”, replied a friend when asked what would give me a thoroughly enjoyable yet enriching high school experience. Today, as I write my final CAS essay, I can vouch for the fact that he was very true. The most enhancing part of my IB Diploma program-CAS- has brought about a terrific difference in my personality. I have transformed from someone who took pleasure in enjoying for the sake of enjoying to someone who takes pleasure in enjoying responsibly, at the same time growing as an individual.

Writing haikus- pithy three line verses- and contributing to the school’s official newsletter as a writer made me aware of my weaknesses as an essayist at the same time giving me pleasure. But I understood my limitations, identified goals and devised a strategy for improving my writing skills by amassing a good vocabulary and gaining sufficient control over my language. The rewards were visible rather shortly, as my provisional and actual scores in English A1 began to improve. Furthermore, my essay on the making of a ‘global citizen’ was hailed as exemplary and gave me the honors of being a finalist (top 20 all India level) in the global citizens scholarship competition. I was soon appointed as the editor of my school’s newsletter upon requesting the in charge, and received many compliments for good writing and editing. I can thus say that writing for the newsletter and penning down my emotions in the form of haikus were seminal activities that sowed the seeds of a good writer in me, and I am enjoying the fruits even today as I write many college application essays and do other written work.

As part of the service component of CAS, I have been teaching Mathematics to Shankar and Aniket, two sixth graders who happen to take shelter in an orphanage in Nagpur city. This has been a sustained and collaborative project as all CAS students visit the orphanage on alternate Saturdays to teach their students. I must say that the very thought of imagining myself as a teacher seemed daunting in the beginning, but like my other CAS mates, I decided to challenge myself by taking up this new role. What has happened over the past two years will forever be close to my heart, because I have grown as a teacher and a mentor due to this activity. It also feels very fulfilling to have dealt with an issue of global importance-literacy. Shankar and Aniket both received grade A in Math, but they have learnt how to beat the odds and win over challenges too, as a result of constant goading from my side. There were times when it appeared as if I wouldn’t get the time to meet my students, but I tried my best to show commitment and perseverance, with much success. Read More→

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

This post contains samples of written reflections done by IB students after the completion of various CAS activities. The students’ reflection directs towards the main aim of the IB CAS Programme, to develop the IB Learner Profile.

Seven CAS activities and reflections by students after their completion.
• Medical Mission by Nishad Potdar
• Literacy Program by Nishad Potdar
• Planning and Organizing a Village Mock Drill by Kaustubh Chahande
• Reflection on School Activities by Nishad Potdar
• Fun with Water Colours by Aditi Shah
• Make unexpected work as an expected work! by Dasom Chun- South Korea
• Campus greening Project!! by Hyunju Baek- South Korea

The CAS activities may vary in planning, creativity and implementation but the students’ action and reflection shows direction towards a common purpose – betterment of mankind. The CAS programme may seem a big task for the IBDP students, it may seem hard but if we read the reflections of the students, we’ll find the profound meaning of CAS. Projects and activities are not just meant to complete certain hours or task, but it is to build connection between the students world and the real life outside the school.

Cas Project at Selaqui

By IB Clever Subscriber · Comments (0)
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

The IBO’s mission is to create the global citizen, who develops qualities like compassion, responsibility, sense of values and tolerance. To this end, the International Baccalaureate CAS Programme, especially at the Diploma level, is geared towards channelizing the potential in the student, make him or her aware of what he/she has to offer, and share their unique qualities with others less privileged. The need of the hour is to make today’s students take charge of their responsibilities, not only to their family but the greater society around them. This is where the community service activities of the school’s CAS project play a big role. Students, by actively taking part in these community outreach project, develop greater awareness of themselves, concern for others, and the ability to work cooperatively with other people.

It is with this objective in mind that the SelaQui Community CAS project was chalked out. For the SelaQui students, coming from rich backgrounds, and from different parts of the world,  having never been exposed to the harsh realities of life, it presented a unique opportunity to experience first hand the way of life among their less privileged brothers and sisters. Attitudes had to be changed, approaches had to be prepared, empathy, without being condescending had to be developed among the students’ before the start of the CAS project. But, to the credit of the batch of 2007-2008, they rose to the challenge.

The students planned and initiated most of the activities, including Environmental Awareness drive, Cleanliness & Hygiene drive, Drugs Awareness Campaigns, Literacy Drive, Medical Programmes like Blood Donation, to name a few. They liaised with the local community, made self help groups to stop domestic abuses, drinking problems, etc. The enthusiasm with which they took up the activity was like a shot in the arm, not only for the other students but also to the school authorities and teachers, many of whom volunteered to be project In-Charges.

Personally speaking, I had never visioned it to be so dynamic and successful, but the way it shaped up made me feel very proud of the CAS project and the rationale behind incorporating it as a major component of the IB Diploma Programme. Since then, the project has been carried on quite proficiently by my successor.  Even now, I get mails and comments by former students who remember those days with fond memories, and reflect on how their mindset have changed as a result of their learning outcomes vis-a-vis’ new understand and recognising their own potentials, challenges undertaken, working collaboratively, planning and initiating activities, showing perseverance in activities beyond the IB programme, developing new skills, and last but not the least, considering the ethical implications of their actions.
